It may help you to read this article by Mark P. about the weight based Baratzas.

I think you'd find really that pouring from the container is no biggy. Though your idea of hanging a funnel from above may actually work out. Personally however if it were me and I really didn't want to pour from the bin I'd send it back and wait on a regular Vario, JMHO.

I hear you, I do, but - I think the funnel idea will be OK and if not I'll just dump the bin into the PF if I have to. And $450 is much better than $800-900 or whatever, not to mention it's already shipped!

I enjoyed using my Vario-W when I had it.  Went from the hopper into the portafilter though.

I found it was much easier (less messy) than using the can doser on my SJ and I found I used the Vario-W more often than the SJ

Just for the record, today I was playing around with my new Vario-W and I just simply put the basket right on the scale, no funnel required, punched in 14 g and it went right in, all of it. I'm still getting a funnel, though, so I can WDT at that point.

The built in scale is very accurate but it can't go up to the weight of most portafilters.

The basket in a cup worked for me.  I used a metal sauce cup stuck to the scale with a 3m command strip and put the basket in that with a yogurt cup funnel on top.  Stirred and tamped in filter.

Buying advice: GRINDER GRINDER GRINDER. Don't cheap out on the grinder.
