For those of you with Fortes, or for those of you who have purchased the Forte's portaholder for your Vario, I have a question. I'm assuming the stanless steel funnel isn't adjustable, in diameter, for those of us with smaller portafilters/filter baskets (53mm)? In other words, while I'm sure this new portaholder puts the stock Vario one to shame, is it only ideal for 58mm portafilters/filter baksets? I often use the yogurt cup method and hold the portafilter directly under the chute.
Jeff-I have the Forte and am using the portaholder with a 53mm portafilter for a La Spaz MVII. I think it works great. The diameter is not adjustable, but the height is. I had a similar concern, thinking it would be designed for the more common 58mm size, but there is little if any gap from the portaholder guides to the diameter of the portafilter. A user on another site commented that it worked perfectly for their even smaller 49mm portafilter. Depending on how fussy you are with your dosing, it can be as simple as putting the portafilter in the portaholder (there is a lip that holds it in), hitting your programmed time button and it all goes in your portafilter. Good luck!
Agreed. I used the Forte portaholder on my Vario with the La Spaz 53mm portafilter. Works wonderfully. I can even just set the portafilter in place and let it grind into the basket hands free. It's a must-have upgrade for Vario owners, IMHO.
It is a very tight fit, but non unmanageable. If you use the Vario for espresso-only or drip-only to where you won't have to adjust the calibration often, then, IMHO, the portaholder is still a must-have accessory. I say that with the caveat that I am completely oblivious to any long-term damage that may occur from the tight fit. But for daily use without removing, it's just a joy to use. It looks good, my portafilter can sit in it all by itself, and the funnel allows for a pretty clean dose.
