Thanks for the advice. I took it and bought a refurbished Vario. I was settling in on the Vario-W but in the end decided I really wanted to dose straight into the portafilter. I added the cast "portaholder" unit from the Forte which does an excellent job holding the portafilter in place and funneling everything right into the basket.
Most importantly, it made a HUGE difference in taste. I'm not fully dialed in yet as I only had about 20 minutes to play before going to work but the first drink is far less bitter. I'm used to americanos and lattes but the taste right out of the shot glass made me want to stay home and make espressos and macchiatos!
