Subject: SCOOORRRE!  New Major $576

I saw a Mazzer Major on eBay, looked like the seller was an outfit that dealt in shipping damaged goods.  Photos showed  grinder had a bent in doser (only on top), broken timer switch knob, and a small hole punched in the bean hopper.  Just arrived today, grinder is brand new!  Still had the film on the grinds tray.  The top of the doser is pushed in like the box had been dropped.  The bend is so symmetrical, it almost looks normal.  The dosing mechanism isn't affected.  New timer switch knob is $10, just needs a small patch in the hopper.  When I tried to fire her (him?) up, nothing happened.  Crap.  Then I discovered on Majors, hopper has to be installed for grinder to run.  Ended up at $615 after shipping.  Hope I wasn't bidding against any fellow geeksters!

Awesome, I saw that one as well. You can try bending the doser back to round, I've done smaller dents using the aluminum plate from the doser bottom as a form with a leather mallet. Personally I like the little flapper switch as a deflector vs taking it off.

Awesome in deed! Randy did great with this and it's worth a read. Yup

The one thing that that I would have to do from the off is TAKE THAT STUPID STATIC SCREEN out and get a little brush so you can sweep the shoot. The short hopper for the mini will fit but you have to remove the locking collar and defeat the switch. It will of course grind fingers at that point so only do it if your sure.

Should you decide to go without the dosed I am interested in purchasing it.

Great find

Yeah I saw that one as well and it sure looked like a great deal.  Anyone that knows Mazzers just knew that it would be fine mechanically.  I passed on bidding against you guys :)  You're welcome.

Congrats:-)
I would consider cutting a disc of wood not using the bottom casting, they are fragile, uh don't ask :-)

I have never heard of needing the hopper installed to run, perhaps a new safety feature. I use a hopper so it isn't a big deal for me. I am sure it can easily be bypassed if you wish

There is a microswitch in a slot on the top of the grinder.  There is a little tab on the bottom of the hopper base piece that fits into the slot.  For safety I'm sure.  Funny, a separate yellow warning sheet came with the grinder-  "For professional use only- not for home use".   Dang.

It sounds like you are now a pro! :-)
I'm sure that is a lawyer inspired warning, these are very common on commercial gear.
I am guessing that you also have a micro switch that is the full Doser switch in the top of the Doser,  very often removed and bypassed for home use, as I would do with the safety tab in the hopper :-)

The new Mazzer Major models have an extra plastic retaining collar and safety switch.  The older models can be run without the hopper with no problems.

Well the extra plastic thingy can be removed from the actual hopper with a screwdriver making room for a smaller hopper or singledosing, Ive just done it on may used major score... Otherwise Ive heard it should take about two minutes to open op the major and bypass the safety.
