Depends, the dark room timer you don't have to alter your grinder but takes more space. That same site sells one that works like a dark room timer but cost a hundred bucks. Or you can take this timer,stick it in a box and alter your machine.

I close the gate after adding beans to my SJ. Keeps everything down in the burrs AND, I can add a second shot of beans above the closed gate so all I need to do is open the gate to drop the second weigh, close the gate then add another shot to the top and grind away. No muss, no fuss, no flying beans :)
I grind one weight (portafilter) at a time and turn the grinder on until it is finished with the weighed beans, then chuck the dosser until it is empty. I have 3 grinders on the counter so no room for a timer :(
