As the title of the thread suggests I am in a dilemma on which grinder to use.  The rocky is the white version with black plastic back and white aluminum body.  I am interested mostly in espresso and am getting a deal on a rancilio silvia which i will probably pid eventually but not yet.  I know that there are a few mods for the rocky that significantly increase the quality of the grind.  Assuming those mods ( stepless, teflon tape) are done, would the preciso be worth the extra money and perhaps the warranty which the second hand rocky would probably not have?  very confused as I don't really mind spending the 300 but not if I don't have to.

yeah thanks.  Went to the baratza site to purchase the preciso and I guess the coffee gods were listening because they got a refurb preciso in for 230.  Now on to getting my silvia day after tomorrow....

call them up and have them calibrate (may have already done so) to espresso, basically setting the screw to fine. Mine was set to neutral and big difference when I set it to fine, I'm in the 7-10 macro range now depending on bean and dose.

Thanks for the tip.  Called them up just now actually and I spoke to a lady in sales who then spoke to a tech.  She told me the tech told her that all their grinders come calibrated for espresso right out of the box.  Guess I will have to wait and see when I get it.

Well, if you consider the prize, you would prefer the cheaper one. But as the technology is improving, you better choose the new Baratza Preciso. What made the new one better is its certain part which keeps the grind consistent and provides a pulse button or second timer for easier measurement.

Did you know...? Dark roast coffees actually have less caffeine than lighter roasts due to the fact that the process of roasting burns off caffeine.

had a brief play with the preciso during the weekend, and found that it grinded really well for my Silvia...
however, I have been using doser grinders before, so I wasn't too used to the idea of being doserless, so I tend to make a bit of a mess :D  my pre measured single dose beans always end up being short because it goes everywhere, so I ended up just using a cup and removed the portafilter holder... only problem is I noticed a lot of static and the grinds would cling to my grind cup where as when I used the doser in to the cup, it had no static issues... *minor issues*

Had a rocky before... it was a used one with the stepless tape mod, and the doser sweeper mods done on it... bought it cheap, and it worked really well for the Silvia too, but sold it as I had too many grinder in the house then :D

bottom line, don't write off the rocky too quickly if you can get it cheap... plus some people have rocky grinders that last forever...

yeah I think I got a pretty good deal with the refurb preciso... 250 out the door... would have paid 200 for the rocky which would have been cheaper but it being used I was considering the cost of burr replacement and the additional time to mod it correctly.  Another aspect that swayed me was Baratza's service... was reading that if anything goes wrong they will really go the distance in making it right with sending return shipping labels etc out, so that really got me when I was comparing it to Rancilio's service documentation online... I'm still trying to figure out exactly how to service a used Silvia in Socal should the need arise.  I have to call them tomorrow.

Considering how long the grinder will last $100 more for the Preciso really isn't that much. I would go with that grinder.
