Subject: Baratza Encore not as advertised

I purchased a Baratza Encore to replace a Maestro Plus, partially because the Encore is advertised as quieter than the Maestro Plus.  In fact, however, I found the Encore to be louder.  Much louder.  A quick and dirty measurement showed a difference of 9 dB to 10 dB.  I took it back to the shop and compared it to another Encore.  The other one measured 2 dB to 3 dB louder still.

[24 hours later]

Before I posted the note above, I had telephoned Baratza. The tech heard the difference in noise over the phone but could not explain what was going on.  Today I went to another shop which let me experiment with beans and came up with the explanation:  the Encore is much noisier than the Maestro when the hopper is empty but it is indeed a little quieter while grinding coffee.  Apparently the new transmission has more of a tendency to oscillate without the damping of a load.

Interesting, I ordered one for a friend, calibrated it (with screw now in the middle) turned it on and was impressed. To my ears, it was not overly loud, certainly not in any way objectionable. BTW, it did a fine job of grinding, just short of the excellent drip and vac grind I get from my Preciso.
Did you check to make sure the silicon black rubber "funnel" was attached to the upper burr. It accomplishes 2 things, one, keeping grind from getting into the mechanism, and two, quiets things a wee bit.

To my ears the Encore's noise is unacceptable but that is not the point:  it is advertised as quieter than the Maestro Plus but the two units I tried were a great deal louder.  Ten decibels is not a wee bit.

I'm going to throw my two cents in here and say that if it's quieter while grinding than it's quieter so they aren't falsely advertising anything. Really you're going to put beans in before you start it and even if single dosing you're going to turn it off when it's done so the noise when empty shouldn't really be an issue. JMHO

Of course, that was the purport of my followup.

Sorry, but I don't get the point of this thread.
If it works well, what difference does it matter if its louder?
I would be more concerned that it grind BETTER than the Maestro+, and as a former owner of one, I can verify that it DOES.
Yours might also be calibrated to the fine side, which MIGHT be causing a some motor stress noise if set to fine.

Still, it sounds a a bit of fuss, especially if it does the job.

So where do they advertise it as "quieter running empty"?
