Posted Thu May 30, 2013, 2:22pm Subject: Grind Retention on Vario after cleaning.
So I used some compressed air to clean the grounds out of the vario and now i'm looking at getting 14g out when i put in 16g (this is after i tap the machine to get the loose grounds). In the past, I would put 16.2 in and get 16.10 out.
First, am I supposed to clean the chute this way?
Second, what is the best way to 'fill the gaps' so to speak so I can get better grind retention results in the future? So far, its been like this over a week. I expected maybe the first couple times but still?
Third, should I be tapping the grinder like mentioned?

With my Vario I had similar behavior with only two or three types of coffee beans (specialty grade from Costa Rica). In all these cases I had to go very close to the limits of the finer range (too light roast maybe?). So my short answer is that the high retention you observe is coffee dependent. I should note here, that when a high level of retention was observed the excess of that coffee was expelled from the grinder at the next grinding session(s) (i.e putting 16g in and getting 17.5g out).

I've been tinkering with it.
But as to an original question. Do you smack the machine at all? I sometimes tilt it a little and give it a slight smack to makesure all the beans fell in the chamber. Not sure if this hurts it or not.
