Hi guys, I just bought one of these and opened it yesterday to find a screw had fallen into the hopper at some point (I could spin the motor a little back and forth, but could tell something wasn't right). I've read a little about a plate that can wear out inside these, and thought I'd ask for input on this one. Or if you see something I obviously need to replace, it would be great to hear of a solid source for parts. Also, I wanted to open it up and clean but how does one set the burrs into the factory place again?
I picked up a Grindmaster 890 and found that many of the Grindmasters have a shear disk that will break to save the motor from destruction when something falls in the hopper.
I can't tell if this one would work with the 495, but it works for other Grindmaster models. You might want to check Scribd or other sites for archived Grindmaster manuals to see if you can find out more, Scribd seems to be down right now for maintenance.
This picture from the manual should give you an idea of how the burrs go together. The grind cap presses against the shear cover to hold the outer burr in place and when you select the grind the protrusion that presses against the shear cover extends and retracts to set the grind. The spring on the feedworm and rotary burr will act to hold the burrs apart and the selector sets the depth so you should be able to just pull the outer burr out and then press it back in and re-assemble.
I'm having a hard time pulling my 890 outer burr, however and may need to come up with a jig to get it off of the shaft.
Dangit, I put the grinder back together and turned it on to hear burrs grinding on burrs. Ugh. Everything came apart and went together well, but I can't figure out how this adjustment is supposed to work. It doesn't seem to make anything move.
