PS At your profile here, I see that you have Mahlkönig K30 Vario which is a totally different grinder to Vario Home.
Apologies! Error on my part! I have the Mahlkonig Vario Home!
The Mahlkonig website only mentions Ceramic Burrs, not metal! Whenever I have removed the hopper, and looked inside, I have seen the top of something dark grey metal?! Is this the upper burr, or are the burrs below this? Will take a photo when I'm home tonight!
As soon as you sit down to a cup of hot coffee, your boss will ask you to do something which will last until the coffee is cold.
Just a word of caution: You must have the hopper empty, you should grind all the remaining coffee beans between the burrs and the sliders should be all the way down to coarsest settings, before to start taking the top burr carrier out.
I have placed a mark (the circled dot at position A) in one of the upper carrier flaps so to place the carrier always at the same position when I put it back to its place.
You rotate the carrier clockwise until it reaches the next white plastic tab (marked W) where it stops. At this point you can pull the carrier up. Notice where the black dot has gone (line B).
Before you put the carrier back to its place make sure that there is no coffee underneath the 3 white tabs (marked W) as this might affect the proper alignment of the burrs.
Finally, at the bottom picture you can see how the upper burr looks like attached to its carrier. If for some reason you want to remove it you have to undo the 3 screws.

Burrs are a dark brown colour (the colour of coffee in fact!) and definitely not a metallic colour - but they don't look or feel how I was imagining ceramic burrs to be?!
