I have a Nuova Simonelli MCD grinder and I am trying to take it apart to clean it. I have tried removing the 4 screws on top, thinking that would free the top for removal, but the top was still pretty secure with those screws removed. Does anyone here know what I need to do to completely loosen the top of this grinder so I can get at the burrs for cleaning?

Hi and welcome to CoffeeGeek!
Don't forget that you have the grinder adjustment knob on the top of the grinder that is preventing the plate from coming off.. It has some set screws on its collar.

Thanks for the help! I had already tried removing those set screws but didn't realize I had to unscrew the adjustment knob. Any idea how to readjust it when it is reassembled?

Since it is a stepless grinder, there really isn't a fixed set point that you can simply say, "Set the grinder to X and leave it there." Basically, all you have to do is reassemble the grinder after cleaning, with the grinder on adjust the mechanism until the burrs begin "chirping," and then quickly back it off a few turns. Then you should grind some beans and brew, so you can find the setting on the grinder that matches your espresso machine. If the espresso is gushing out or not coming out at all, just remember that a complete turn of the knob is a very small change--this way, you don't waste as much coffee when dialing it in.

Hi there. First time poster so be patient! I have a MCD 65 RA which I'm trying to clean out for a friend. I've taken off the output spout and cleaned that out, as well as the top plate screws and adjustment knob taken off. I can't seem to get the top cover plate to disengage, although after looking at the parts diagram, I'm not sure if taking the top plate will assist at all in cleaning.
Also, is there a thermostatic fuse on this machine? My friend had indicated that the grinder was getting quite hot during frequent use, and I'm wondering if perhaps this could be related to a heat switch in the unit (or the capacitor?).

It has been a few years since I took my MCD56 apart. I seem to remember the 4 screws and the adjustment knob but not much else. There is a sticker on the side of mine that says THERMIC ALARM or some such thing so there seems to be a sensor or over temp device installed.
The grinder should not be run non stop, there should be breaks in time to allow the grinder to cool. Most commercial grinders on a 2/10 cycle or close to that. Two minutes on then ten minutes cool down between cycles.
EDIT; I seem to remember something about the plastic collar needing to come off for access to something too. YMMV!
