That could perhaps explain my troubles single dosing. I would weigh dose in, but not dose coming out as this was the technique that I used successfully with the vario. I tried many back to back and hence did not bother purging between doses; but I may have been chasing my tail a bit by making adjustments either way with grind, while not allowing enough time for the old grounds to be purged....I may need to try this again with this in mind, but have settled on the full hopper for now (using the vario for other beans, so no real need to single dose any more). So yes, this may be an issue, but I don't find it to adversely affect shot taste with a full hopper. (I now weigh dose after grinding). I usually don't bother purging before shot either (sometimes a gram or so). I use the doserless version.
definitely. and it will annoy you the entire time. ;-) it's obviously a very well built machine, but i can't for the life of me understand some of their design decisions. the play in the grind adjustment is the result of the fins in the upper burr assembly being (a lot) smaller than the slots in the lower.. just fitting them more precisely would have eliminated the very annoying play -- as it is i filled in the extra space and sandpapered to fit, but i shouldn't have had to. never could figure out how the adjustment scale was supposed to work, either -- i eventually pulled out the stop screw, repositioned the collar and added my own markings. it also clumps a fair bit .. but the grind quality and range is good.

The grind retention of my Vario is usually less than .2 grams. I weigh out for single dosing 18-21 grams and reweigh afterward. I'm pretty impressed. I also find that if i run the Vario for a couple seconds after my initial 15/17 seconds of grinding it will dispense the rest of the dose. Consistency of grinds is excellent and the adjustability is very easy. I'm easily able to pull shots of several different varietals and account for the differences in bean density and roast.
