David, I also own both grinders, a Vario-W (weight based grinding) and the Preciso with Esatto attachment (also provides weight based grinding.) In both cases, you must grind into the bin, and distribute via pouring into the basket with the aid nof your cupped hand or a 'funnel" made for this purpose. IU find this no problem at all. There IS a difference between the 2 as far as taste. The Vario very similar iu=n taste profile to a Mazzer SJ (more of the darker elements) while the Preciso grind gives me more of the fruitier elements.
If you generally like medium/medium dark roasts (FC, no oil) I'd go with the regular Vario. You can dose directly into the PF/basket, as you do now with your Preciso. If you prefer the darker Vienna style espresso blends, you might stay with the Preciso. Why not spend a few weeks with the new machine, get familiar with IT. This way, the grinder is a non factor in your "learning curve" with the new machine.

Rob, I'm curious to know...is the difference in taste solely due to the Vario having a flat burr set and the Preciso conical, or do you think there are other factors at play?

Well, I am here with an update to my original post. Thanks everyone who replied for your input. My Rocket R58 arrived with an electrical defect (it would not turn on) and apparently I am not the only one so I am back to my Silvia. I did find a used Fiorenzato T80 grinder on ebay for a decent price and it is working very nicely. The burrs are in good shape but the whole grinder needed major cleanup. It looks to have been used with some very oily beans that had dried to a tar. The burr adjustment ring was frozen and i used a rubber strap wrench to free it up. I had to clean up the threads thoroughly so I mark the zeroed setting, and once I dialed in my beans it is rocking and rolling! Hopefully the grinder will last a while, because I like how the adjuster with the flat burrs feels very solid and repeatable.
