Being a noob, I've done quite a bit of reading on the Rocky's shortcomings as an espresso grinder, and have read about the MD-40 as well. But I haven't seen a lot about the MD-50 (the few reviews were rather vague), and, as luck would have it, I've got a chance to grab a used one (indeterminate age, but seems to be in pretty nice condition) for $250. So what do you think? I've got a Gaggia Classic and am weighing the Rancilio against a refurb Vario ($325), refurb Preciso ($239), a new Ascaso i-Steel I-2 ($235), or a used Nuova Simonelli MDX (???) or Pasquini Moka 90 (???), or the old standby--the Gaggia MDF on WLL for $199.00. My budget is about $275-325 out of the $550, so 50%+ is going to the grinder. The only reason I mention the MDF is that it allows me to purchase a naked portafilter as well. And this grinder would be for espresso use only, as I have my trusty modded Solis 166 for other brewing purposes. EDIT I am also open to hand grinders, and since it will be dedicated to espresso, would consider the OE Pharos. EDIT Shower me with some precious nuggets of wisdom, people, and thanks in advance.

alright of the grinders that you listed the only ones that I have any actual hands on experience with is the 166 and the Simonelli MDX. if you have the room for it I would say go with the MDX. it is every bit the grinder that's a super jolly isand if you have the room for it and the money to buy it you will not be sorry.
