Grinder: Baratza Vario Drip: Chemex, Aeropress, Bodum...
Posted Sat Oct 13, 2012, 9:50am Subject: Baratza Virtuoso 586 timer knob doesn't activate motor
So I recently upgraded grinders to a refurb Virtuoso 586 (the model with the Precisio's burrs) that I ordered straight from Baratza. I was super-excited, and once I unboxed it, super-disappointed. The pulse button (the one for grinding directly into a portafilter) works fine, but the timer knob doesn't work at all! When I turn it, I hear the timer ticking down, but the motor doesn't engage.
Per Baratza's instructions, I popped open the case (earning a few nice nicks in the plastic while doing so) to check the connections, but all the spade clips were firmly in place. I guess the grinder still works, but I'd rather not have to sit there holding down the pulse button. I guess it's not that bad, given how fast it is, but I'm kind of obsessing over this, so I was wondering:
Does anyone have any experience with this issue? Or enough electronics experience to take a guess at what might have gone wrong? Or should I just give up and send it back to them for an exchange...I'd really hate to go back to using my old grinder while I wait for the exchange process to take its sweet time (which I suspect it will).

Hi Evan, I am sorry to hear of the failed timer switch on your Virtuoso. I am a bit surprised at this since we test all of the switches during the refurbishing process. Please contact support@baratza.com and we will get a replacement grinder sent out to you on Monday. You do NOT need to part with your current Virtuoso until after the replacement arrives. It will come with a prepaid return shipping label to make returning your "bad" grinder easy. I am in Taiwan as i write (it's Monday already!), but i am sure the Baratza support guys will take care of you come Monday in Seattle. Again my apologies for the hassle and disappointment this has been for you. Regards, Kyle President, Baratza

Thanks so much, Kyle...good to know you guys care. I was in touch with Pierce in support (who is an excellent guy!) and I let him know that we'll need to do an exchange. As my dad said the other day...if this is the biggest problem I have, I'm a lucky man. Thanks again!
