I've had an updated Preciso Virtuoso since April. Overall it works well but I often have to go to the 3's for espresso which I find strange and slightly disconcerting. Twice already the plastic burr holder has cracked. When then happens, I noticed the macro adjustment felt mushy instead of notchy, and I had to go to the 1's and 2's and results were inconsisent. So, yes, if you're having trouble, check the burr holder. Their customer support says the holder is like a "fuse" and cracks so nothing else has to, but I don't think other grinders have this issue. Fortunately, their service is indeed very resonsive. I emailed them over the weekend and got the holders today (they sent an extra in case it happens again).
If I were purchasing a grinder now, I might go with a Vario to avoid these problems.
By the way, I change settings often as I use it for drip and espresso. I weigh out beans everytime I grind so the hoppers always empty. I do run the grinder very slightly while adjusting macro or micro. I described what I do to Baratza customer support and they said it was fine.

Unless you're running the grinder adjusting all the way to burr touch, running the grinder a few seconds with no beans is no problem. Actually, if I remember correctly burr touch is nearly impossible. Or that may be with the Vario. I'm nowhere near there. My Preciso does espresso for my Olympia Cremina lever at 9 H, give or take a few letters up or down, Any Preciso needing to be set either 3 or more Macro clicks up or down is, IMO in need of an internal calibration.
Are you referring to the do-it-yourself calibration (I've done that) or something they do at Baratza? They're telling me it's fine since I can still grind way finer than I need to.
