I was talking about grinding directly into a portafilter basket, not the portafilter itself. I even said "Portafilter basket" in my previous post.... I know some portafilters don't have removable baskets, that you can't do anything about.

The distance between the top of the basket and the grinders chute would require adding more of something and that is adding unnecessary weight. It would also mean a bigger mess with grounds flying around.
Perhaps. What about adding one of these as well? I agree that it would add weight, but probably not much more than 50 grams if it's machined out of aluminum.

Qualin: I have both of those and the second one is certainly light in comparison to the 1. I like them both since they have a feeling of elegance but the cut yogurt cups are more practical. They will not get dinged or bent by dropping them; now if they had yogurt cups that were all one color... Or maybe a yogurt cup that was made for a "Mocha Yogurt"!
Coffeenoobie: If the yogurt cup idea is working then go with it! I found the yogurt cup idea to be pretty good since not only is it light but it can be cut to just about any length or shape and can be squished into different shapes for pouring grounds into a portafilter or beans into a grinder like the Pharos.
Not sure what "Command strip tape" is, please enlighten me.

If you take a cotton ball and nail polish remover you can clean the writing off the yogurt cup like I did. (see how my tillamook cup is now plain white) Thanks, Pinterest for that tidbit.
There are command hooks and tape made by 3M that you see advertised a lot at Christmas time (wreaths and stockings) for hanging things that don't mark your wall. I have one on my computer to hang my head phones. I tried using 2 as coat hooks but my coats must be too heavy or the cheap not painted door I have not a good surface. They are sold everywhere, walmart, target, hardware stores. Click Here (www.command.com) All I have done is use the extra tape that came with some hooks I already have to attach my cup. You can see the end of the tape sticking out the front of the scale. That is so I can grip it to remove it when it gets gunked up with coffee dust. If I bump the cup too hard it will come off. So, dust works its way under there when it is loose. I just get another strip of tape. I don't want to damage the scale or make it so it can't be used the way it came from the factory and this works really well and every thing you see I already had hanging around my house. I think the sauce cup might be a cup that a tea strainer used. But you can find something that your basket can sit in. I used metal because I wanted to and I had it but you could use a cut down yogurt cup for that also. That is what I started with was 2 yogurt cups. One cut like a cup and one cut to a funnel. The problem with the yogurt cup on bottom is the cup is not flat and so there is less surface area to hold with the tape. That came off more often because dust got in there more and it was not stuck as well. The cup I have now is flat and only got knocked loose when I took it to Seattle.

OK, I know it's a little late in the thread....
A local vendor has offered to take my Rancilio Rocky on a trade in. However, my options are a little limited on what I can trade it in with. (I'd rather not say who until I get a much more firm quotation.)
My options are :
- Baratza Vario-W - Compak K-3 Touch
I personally like the features of the Vario-W over the Compak. I mentioned that before in the thread. I guess I wonder now which one will result in a better cup of espresso. The vendor thought the Vario-W was gimmicky.
BTW, Who at Compak thought it would be a good idea to put the grind time adjustment screw on the underside of the grinder? Opinions?
Both have great reviews. My thoughts is that either one will do the trick. Its more a matter of convenience more than anything. Both are a good step up from what I have. They're both priced at about the same.
This seems to be a common notion, because it's the same with my Eureka Mignon Istantaneo (aka Nuova Simonelli MCI). I simply modified it by attaching a cogwheel to the screw. I don't know, however, if it can be done with the Compak as well, which I still would prefer personally over the Vario.

Yep, it looks like someone at Compak is drinking the wrong brew to put that adjustment under the machine. The gear attachment allowing for side adjustment sound/looks like a great idea! Kudos for the simple fix.
The Baratza group was at least thinking about improvement when they added the weight sensitive shutoff. I am also considering the Vario-W as a replacement for my Rocky Doserless.
