So, after many hours of looking, almost buying and relooking, I am to the point that I just want someone else to decide...Have limited my choices to the 3 models, breville smart grind, virtuoso 586 and the preciso.
90% of the time it will be espresso, I don't use FP...machine is a gaggia classic.
Pretty sure the Preciso will be the one, but just need a little reassurance...would like to keep budget at $300.

I'd go with the preciso. I have the smart grinder but will be returning it once my Preciso comes in. The smart grinder works ok with some beans (if they are fresh) but simply will not allow me to go finer if I need to. Even with the freshest beans (intelligentsia and stumptown) at the finest grind with 30lb tamp (espro calibrated tamper) and 18-19 g dose I get 2 oz in 25 seconds including a 5 second pre-infusion. I have a smart grinder with the updated burrs, I can't wait til my preciso comes in so I can try some Blue Bottle coffee with a 1.5 oz in 35 second extraction time.
For espresso, go for the Preciso. For brewing only, go for the virtuoso. The Preciso will also grind great for brewing. The Vario seems to produce sweeter chocolatey shots in comparison to brighter shots from the Preciso. That falls more in the flat vs conical comparison.
From what I have read, the Preciso wins in the drip and coarse ranges compared to the Vario.

Don't get the Preciso. I have it and there is another thread on it. There are plastic parts that hold the burrs wear out easily. It grinds great if you leave the setting set. Once you move it the plastic parts start to deform quickly and you get zero uniformity in your grind.
The company is great to deal with but they went el cheapo on this design. They know it to.
