Posted Wed Jun 27, 2012, 2:54pm Subject: Bad Grind Consistency(is this normal?) Rust on my brand new burrs(rust solved).
Hey guys, i just got a replacement grinder. It looks to be brand new from the box and everything else.
I took it apart to inspect the parts of the grinder and found that the burrs have quite a bit of rust on it. This isnt just rust spots but a more considerable portion of the burrs rusted.
What do you think?
I emailed them about it and am waiting on a response but i feel like this may be too much. i dont feel good about ingesting rust every time i make a cup of coffee.
This is beginning to be a real hassle.
*the grind consistency thing is detailed a couple posts down.

Hi Frank,
I've been servicing Baratza grinders here in Canada since May 2010. This can happen to the burrs if they've been handled by bare hands & too much relative humidity in the air. It's more than likely the salt in ones perspiration & it will oxidize (rust) the metal slightly.
Do you have any Grindz or parboiled rice that you could run through the grinder, or possibly some old coffee beans? That will oe should polish away what you're seeing.

In the manual it says that the burrs may arrive with some rust on them (at least I think I read that in the manual). They recommend seasoning the burrs with a 1/4 of throw away beans to get the burrs nice and ready to go.

yeah, that's what baratza support just told me. I ran about a 1/4 lb through it and it seemed to help a little bit. Looks like it'll need a lot more to get it all off.
i have another concern, though. the grind consistency seems to be really bad on both of these units that i've had when grinding in upper espresso to low drip settings (i tested 8-20). At 20, it's horrible. All over the place big chunks, powder and everything in between. As i go lower, the chunks get smaller but they're still there. 8's consistency looks decent but maybe it's only because the grinds are so much smaller. The 8 grind still feels like coarse sand.
This is a replacement i received because the first one was doing pretty much the same thing with really bad grind consistency.
From all the reviews i've seen, i dont remember seeing anything like this reported so i feel like this cant be right...but two in a row from different sources and different batch with the same issue?(first was from amazon. vendor named Barista Lab. replacement was directly from baratza and had slightly different inside packaging).
Once i get the pictures uploaded, i'll show you the pictures.

Is this the Preciso? Out of curiosity, is the plastic ring around the burr intact? I have owned a Preciso and now use a Virtuoso regularly without issue. Honestly, I would recommend consulting with Baratza's customer support, as they will be able to diagnose any issues much faster without the frustration of waiting for responses from the online community here. I mean no offense to the community here, but know that Baratza will be able to help right away!

Hey Sam, it's actually the new Encore. I did contact baratza and am waiting on a response. It just seems strange to me that two different grinders are doing the same thing. I wonder if other owners of this grinder have the same results. If this is normal for this model grinder, i will likely return it.
oh and yes it's all intact. These two grinders were brand new.

I personally don't have any experience with the Encore. I'd be interested to see an image of the grounds to see the inconsistency. You can also call Baratza if you would rather get through to them a bit faster. I'm sure they'll help you out!
