Subject: New Preciso not grinding fine enough?

I just got my new machines (BDB and Preciso grinder).  I don't think my preciso is grinding fine enough. I put in on 1A (as far as I can tell). I wouldn't say it is grinding a fine powder. I a only getting 7.5 bars and like 13 sec shot on the BDB.

I know it could dose and tamping too, but the grind just doesn't seem that 'fine'.  How do I tell if I need to modify the grinder?  Can anyone point me to instructions/posts on that?

I am a newbie, so I could be doing all sorts of things wrong.

You are able to calibrate the grind on the Preciso either finer or coarser. Visit the Baratza website and look under troubleshooting for the calibrating PDF (no worries, nothing wrong with your Preciso!). If that does not seem to make the grind finer, contact Baratza and they will be able to help you get the grind you are looking for.

Did the recalibration (it was on coursest setting). Not sure if it is finer or not, but the macro grinder doesn't 'click' when adjusting setting. Is it supposed to?  I can't remember.

Yes it does click. There is a little plastic nub seated in a slot under the adjustment ring. It sounds like it popped out while you were calibrating. It's about half an inch long. Once you find it, just pop it back into its slot and youll hear the clicks.

Happy to help. I really love the Preciso and have learned quite a bit about it from my own tinkering.

Sam,

Thanks for the email. I will try and put it back when I next go inside the machine. I need to call Breville as it is not close to fine rough even after recalibration. Will do it this week.

What Other tinkering have you done?

I took some time to more or less take apart the adjustment mechanism and got to know how the gearbox fits together and what not. It's all very easy to explore and fix if the need arose. I am not much of a DIY person, but had no problem navigating the inner workings of my Preciso. I have since traded in my Preciso for a Virtuoso with the Preciso burrs, because I simply did not have use for the micro adjustment function and wanted somebody that would use it to have my Preciso. I really do love that grinder, but love the burrs it uses even more!

Revisiting this thread:

I have been using my Preciso for almost two years.  It recently stop grinding fine enough... I just too it apart and the calibration is all the way to fine and there didn't seem to be any problems.  I had this happen one time before, but it turned out the white ring had split, so I replaced and it worked fine again for awhile.

Any other suggestions for making it go finer?  What does the red mark on the white ring mean in terms of reassembly (it appears that the white ring can go on one of two ways)?
