They are the same size, but as noted above, the burrs on the Mini-E and the SJ have a somewhat differerent pattern, with the SJ burr pattern supposedly being the superior of the two. From what I have read on the matter, for average home use, the Mini-E burrs can be easily replaced with SJ burrs, and should provide a grind on par with that of the SJ, albeit with a slower motor speed. Under light to average home use, overheating of the motor should not be an issue.
Not sure if you have already made a decision on this, but coming from a Mazzer Mini (non-E model) and given the choice between the Baratza Vario and the Mini-E with SJ burrs, I would choose the Mazzer every time (even with the standard Mini-E burrs). Mazzer build quality is second to none, looks and feels like a commercial machine, and will most likely last a lifetime (maybe 2). Can't really say the same about the Vario.
