Hi all, I'm looking to upgrade my grinder and I have been looking at the mazzer mini and the mazzer super jolly. I'm probably leaning towards the SJ but I had a quick question. Why is there such an incredible price difference between the SJ doser and the SJ doserless/electronic? I mean its about 700 dollars difference. Am I missing something here?
In addition does anybody know why there was such a jump in price for the mazzer mini? I read the review on coffeegeek and at the time of the review you could pick one up for about 375 (275 with an espresso machine) but now they're in the 600+ range. I know the review was a few years ago - but still to almost double in price seems a bit excessive. Did the model or internals change at all?

When I was considering my recent grinder upgrade, the SJ Electrinic was on my short list as well. I'm not sure if it's possibly an older version but 1st Line has the SJ Electronic quite a bit cheaper than all other merchants I researched.
Cal and Jason raise good points. What exactly about using a doser is such put off? If it's only the residual grinds left behind, Cal is the man to talk to (see his posts in this thread--after his mods his doser is VERY clean).
While grinds left behind in a doser is one reason I personally avoid them, I also want as much consistency as possible built right into the grinder, thus I choose a timer based model. Using a timer isn't as precise as dosing by weight but my ProM is pretty damn consistent (within 0.1-0.2 grams per dose) and the grinds drop nicely into the PF with very little mess, if any. If any of this appeals to you, take a look at the Baratza Vario. I personally have no experience but from what I've seen here and over at Home Barisa.com, they generally have the reputation of being in the SJ 'ballpark', so to speak, for performance and are quite a bit cheaper. There are 2 versions (timer and weight based), depending on your preference.
Using a doser for household use is a mistake because ground coffee goes stale: Unless you don't mind whacking whacking to keep the doser empty and then use the grinder just as an instant one, you should be the person that best knows yourself... Difference in price is normally difference of electronics cost, that is not so cheap because numbers are not in the tenths of thousands.... And I will not tell you to go for a cheaper unit because that can only be your choice... It seems though that the tendency is to go doserless and instant even in the commercial arena, just think of a cafeteria that wants to offer customers the option of a few different blends, where the logical answer can only be various different instant grinders... Ciao, Pietro
I do not think there is anyone here, at home, that fills the doser to pull one shot and has the rest go stale. Having used both doser and without, it is FAR cleaner to use a doser for a single dose and it also allows you to grind while doing other things.
I grind by time into the doser so my one shot is there and waiting. A few strokes on the lever and all the coffee is in my PF, not a big deal to me but perhaps it is too physically demanding to pull the lever 4 times to get the coffee out rather than just once, if someone falls into that situation, I am sorry for you.
Yes the difference in price is the electronics with the electronic dosing grinders. The funnel adaptor which converts a SJ to a doserless, simply replaces the doser and you are no longer using a lever at all. Even though it is considerably messier.
To the OP, Christopher. I never received a PM, my public email is listed in my bio information, and I am basically off line over the weekends so I have not ignored you, sorry for any trouble this has caused.
