Purchased the BCG800 to use for French press and drip coffee. I really like the design, zero static and price point. However, it will not grind coarse enough for FP. I am wondering if this is a defective unit. Are any of you Breville BCG800 owners having a similar experience?

I, too, am having difficulty grinding for FP. For me, the machine is capable of grinding quite coarse, but it isn't consistent & I'm getting a lot of fine grinds mixed in (resulting in a lot fine particles in the bottom of the cup). Is your grind uneven, or will is simply not grind coarse enough?

My problem is strictly that the grinder is not grinding coarse enough. I use a Baratza Virtuoso for FP at my office setting it at close to the most coarse setting, and the results is great. See the picture at this thread for what I am looking for: "The Baratza Vario Grinder Owner's Thread"?LastView=1324174639&Page=6 My BCG800 doesn't come even close to the grounds in that picture. The FP I made with the most coarse setting is not drinkable, because so much of the ground coffee is suspended in the liquid. I prefer some floating coffee matter in my FP, but not this much. This may be a problem with this particular grinder, but I am gifting this one to family for Christmas, who does nothing but drip coffee, and have ordered a Baratza Vario.

From what I hear, the BCG800 needs a shim kit as the older versions had an issue where they couldn't grind fine enough. Shim kit sorts that out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8piBChRggPM

ddun, Before you give up on it I suggest you a shimming "backwards", IOW, try to take off some shims that are under the bottom burr (loosening the nut on top of lower burr) and see what happens. Leonardo

For some reason I could not view that video, but my guess is my grinder has the opposite problem from the old ones that would not grind fine enough. A shim would move the burrs closer together, so I will contact Breville to see if I can remove the shim or otherwise adjust the distance between the top and bottom burrs.
