Baratza Vario or Preciso - Which one would you get?
am considering buying one of these grinders. Right now I could get the Preciso or I could wait a 2 or three weeks tops and get the Vario instead. The time factor is merely for reference and shouldn't be a factor in the decision - assume a price of zero for each - like it will be a gift.
I know some on this board have tried both and many have one or the other. Many more might be right where I am now trying to decide between these two grinders.
I have a decent grinder selection (burr and flat) but I have the opportunity to get one or the other of these grinders so I would like to take advantage of it while I can.

I chew coffee beans with my teeth while gargling with 195 F water to enjoy coffee. What is this "coffee brewing" device you speak of?

Hey Eric, You're on a purchase spree again!=O What kind of brewing method will you be using it for?Espresso or brewed coffee?I have not owned the Preciso and only the Vario at one point. If you're using it for brewed, I think Preciso is probably a better choice as some reported that Preciso has less fines as compared to Vario at coarser setting. You already have one of the best flat burr out there, why another flat?=P Vario is a good choice mainly for espresso but you already have a dedicated grinder for that. So get I would get a preciso, or a bigger conical if I were in your shoe. =P Also, flat vs conical has a different taste profile. You could choose from brighter shot(with Preciso) and chocolatey shot(with K30),depending on your mood of the day. Best of both world. =)

It is my understanding and I may be wrong here, but I think the vario is a do everything grinder and the preciso is an espresso only grinder with them both being about the same for espresso.
Thus the choice is more of what do you want the grinder to do for you?

Fortunately, the Preciso can do a very uniform grind, with a distinct lack of fines across its grinding range. In fact, the Preciso even beats the Vario at coarser grinds, and I have a theory as to why.

Vario is probably a slightly more superior espresso/all-use grinder in term of its ergonomic. But for espresso I believe there'll be a difference in taste due to the conical vs flat. In that sense, one is probably no better than the other. Just different.

That's the sentence that swayed my choice. I had been wanting a small conical to compare to the Bunn LPG for drip and press grind. The fact that it almost matches the Vario for espresso means it's also suitable for my motor home.

Eric, are you trying to spend your ebeans? ;) I own Preciso. I have never had Vario, so I can't compare, but the only problem I have with Preciso is static. Coffee comes in clumps if it is too fine. I would ask around how Vario performs in this case if it bothers you. In Vario, the fact that it can measure the right amount of coffee is appealing to me.

I think the Preciso is considered to be a decent do everything grinder too according to forum feedback I am reading as well as Mark's Baratza white paper and CG review.

I am about to get a Preciso to replace my Virtuoso which handles all duties other then espresso, the Vario handles my espresso and I am very happy with it for that job. I considered the Vario-W but it is hard not to pay attention to what Mark wrote up about the Preciso. If I needed a grinder for 90% espresso I would get the Vario but I need a grinder to do 80% non-espresso ( once I use the Preciso for espresso I may edit this post, lol).

^^^ This makes sense to me. I vote for the Preciso in your case. Mine makes me happy. If you still hanker for a Vario after experimenting with the Preciso, just blog for a few more months. ;)

Thanks Sam, Wayne, Alexander (yep - you guessed it - ebeans), Dan, Rob and Josh. Right now the Preciso is getting my attention over the Vario since I already have a lot of the features besides grounds retention covered with my other flat burr grinder. I will have to sleep on this helpful information - Thanks again.
