Let me phrase it in a different way. Where I have my Vario calibrated for espresso and change to the coarsest grind it is about equal to what my Virtuoso does at setting 25 and I use a grind around 35 with the Virtuoso for FP with a steep time of 4 min. I most certainly could use the Vario for FP but I would shorten the steep time to around 2.5 min at the calibration it is at.

Ok, yes I hear what you're saying now Rob. In all honesty, I haven't used my Vario for FP now for over one year (I think 1½ years approx) after getting a Preciso.

I guess I will stay with multiple grinders. Some for espresso, some for other brew methods. I know not everyone has the room or the $ to have multiple commercial grinders. I need new burrs for the MDX but even with only half sharp burrs, it does a good job. The MCD 65 is a very good multi purpose grinder but it is a bit hard to dial in for espresso, though it is stepless, the adjustment range from coarse to turkish is only about 300 deg rotation of one knob.
So, in the large view of things, have most of the issues with the Vario been worked out? I thought it had a pretty good track record here!
My original Vario developed just about every problem I have seen mentioned but the replacement that was sent has been trouble free for well over a year and I am very happy with it.
I originally was going to get just the Esatto for my Virtuoso (which has been trouble free for close to 5 years with just changing the upper burr) but then I read Mark's write up on the Preciso and decided to get it and pass my Virtuoso on to a friend. It will be nice to have a second grinder when needed for espresso so it take to much arm twisting for me to make the decision.
