3 slotted screws hold the lower burr in place, remove the screws. I needed to give the lower burr a very gentle nudge with the screw driver from inside a screw hole to free the burr up but I repeat Gentle.
It may be the safety switch for the hopper that is the problem, if the hopper is not engaged fully the grinder will not run. The switch could be faulty or the nubb on the hopper that engages the switch could be damaged.
Baratza has excellent customer service so if anything is wrong they will take care of you.

Yes, I did set the macro adjustment to Esp without the motor running. I read the note: "whenever moving the macro lever up, the grinder should be running" after it was too late. Have I terminally destroyed the machine? And yes, there's a distinct loud click when I engage the hopper. I've written an email to Baratza.

I removed the lower burr. Everything was clean. After all, it's a brand new grinder and I had the motor working with beans in the hopper for about two seconds.

Well you never know and now you have ruled out that possibility. My money is on something to do with the safety switch for the hopper, if it is a bigger problem do not worry, Baratza will take care of you.

+1. Kim, after the first 3-4 lbs run through the Vario, I always recommend a detailed cleaning. later on, maybe after 10-15 lbs, just remove the hopper, upper bur, and sweep everything clean. DO NOT turn the Vario upside down.
Ask "Mr. Vario", Craig Andrews. Truly, he knows these grinders inside out, better than I. I believe it has something to do with detaching the belt drive? Or not.

The problem has been identified. Pierce Jens, of Baratza, asked me to look at the circuit board. Sure enough, a few of the doodads were scorched. He's sending me a new circuit board.

Kim, sorry I only got to the thread now at this last date/time. Was it resistor R6 & R7 as circled on the right hand pic? The pic shows two Vario pcb's, on the left for eariler serial numbered units., & on the right for the later numbered units.
