Emailed Baratza today asking them for more information between maestro plus and virtuoso and was given this small nugget of info.

In March we will be introducing a new grinder, the Virtuoso Preciso ($275).  It is a virtuoso with the addition of a micro adjustment.

We feel that it will be a perfect home grinder.  Accurate enough to be a really good espresso grinder and yet easy to adjust for any style of coffee.

I probably should not have mentioned the Preciso, it will just make your decision harder.

Best wishes

Didn't see anything when I did a search so figured I would share the information.

Man that's interesting.  I just picked up a refurbed Virtuoso to go with my new-to-me Silvia (I know, I know, not ideal but all I can swing at the moment).  I can get some halfway decent shots with this grinder, but am really intrigued about this new one now.  I was contemplating an upgrade soon, but with this news I may just pick up a hand grinder for espresso for now and wait and see what this new one is all about.

Well, I understand why Baratza might do this. It fills in the gap in their product line between the Virtuoso and the Vario. I am less clear about why to buy one. A refurb Virtuoso is a heck of a fine press and drip grinder at a very attractive price. But when you run the price up to $275, you must compare it to the Vario and a number of other true espresso grinders. Tough competition for the small burrset in the Virtuoso/Preciso.

Yeah I was gonna pick up a refurb for my drip needs as well but I think I might also make due until there's some more information on this item. The email certainly raised more questions than it answered at any rate, damn them for improving their products! :-)

In my situation, having a dedicated espresso grinder as well as a drip/press grinder isn't an option.  My wife already complains about how much coffee-related stuff is on the counter, so having 2 appliances that in her eyes "do the same thing" won't fly.  I'm predominately a drip/press coffee drinker but would like to be able to make good espresso when the mood strikes me.  So I'm looking for a grinder that is great at drip/press (which the Virtuoso already is) and good at espresso (Virtuoso is only barely passable here) with ease of switching between the two.   I know the Vario supposedly fits this bill, but the $400+ price tag doesn't.  So I would be very interested in a $275 jack-of-all-trades grinder.

I'm in the same boat with my Wife and the counter.  I've got a PID for my espresso machine that I have to hide after each use until I repackage it to be counter-worthy, and currently I'm stuck with a Cuisinart false burr grinder for all my non-espresso needs and the Kyocera ceramic hand mill grinder for espresso so I'm eagerly awaiting word on the performance of the Baratza Virtuoso Preciso.

I did find the following tantalizing tweets (I hope it's ok to post these):

Mark Prince: The Vituoso Preciso grinder on (www.twitter.com)

A low res photo of the new Baratza Virtuoso Preciso grinder on (www.twitpic.com)

Is it just me or is it harder and harder to avoid twitter these days for your coffee info fix?

Nope.. Twitter needs to be added to the list of places to go while coffee-ing around the web.
