As someone who has owned a Capresso Infinity and now owns a Vario, I can say the Vario is an excellent choice! I love coffee almost anyway (except Turkish) and have used the Vario for it all without disappointment. I'm not sure what makes the Vario so magical, but even at its coarsest setting the grind is very even with very little fines (much less than you'll see with your Infinity).

I'm in the same boat. I'm using a KA proline but want to upgrade. The vario is at the top of my list my only reservation being how well it will be able to perform long term. The reviews here look very good but the machine itself is relatively new. For that reason I am still considering a used SJ. I like the smaller size and adjustment capability of the Vario but the SJ seems to be bulletproof other then burr replacement.

Greg, if it's for espresso only, I'd go for the used SJ. But if you're going to need it or a variety of types of grinding, I'd get the Vario -- its #1 on my Xmas list.

I'm wondering with all that electronic stuff that adjust the grind the Vario may be prone to failure sooner than a SJ. I'm a big beliver in keeping things simple. I can use my KA for drip and use the SJ for espresso only. The only issue would be counter space. BTW I just got a Quickmill Andreja today haven't even had time to do anything with it.

Bear in mind, Greg, that many of us have two -- or even three -- grinders at home. (Yes, we're a sick lot.) Presently at home, I have a Mahlkönig K30 Vario as my main espresso grinder, a Quick Mill doserless as my occasional decaf grinder, and a third grinder for drip and press. My plan is to replace the latter two with one: the Baratza Vario, which will still be small enough to take with me when I travel into the vast espresso wasteland . . .

Well, that was just my HOME setup, and I didn't count the Krups blade grinder (yes, now only for spices). In my OFFICE, there's a Cimbali Max Hybrid and a Nuova Simonelli MCI . . . ;^

Well.....all these comments did was reaffirm that the Vario is the right choice for me.
I ordered it from Chris Coffee this morning and worked out a deal to pick one up directly from Kyle at Baratza (as I live in Bellevue, WA where they are located).

I do realize this post is old, but for the sake of other doing research, Vario-W is a great model. It allows you to grind the precise amount of coffee for all types of coffee beverages.
