Hi,

I just installed new burrs in my Mazzer SJ, but it doesn't seem to be working so well. Nothing came out of the chute, and somehow it seems as if its working backwards....all of the grinds saying in the chute after grinding some of the beans.

Ever happened to anyone? I keep looking at the burrs and don't see how you can put them backwards, it seems to me that it shouldn't matter which goes up and down?

Thanks

ok nevermind, I don't really understand how, but unscrewed the top (holding the upper burr) and put it back again, and now it seems to be working ok...

I guess I'll adjust everything and try a shot!

My guess is that the grinder is adjusted too fine.

Please make sure first that there is nothing under the burrs, meaning, the whole area needs to be spotless clean before installing the new burrs into position.  A few grains trapped under a burr can cause issues.

Once you're certain the burrs were mounted cleanly and firmly, then assemble the grinder and tighten the upper burr carrier down until the burrs just barely touch....approach this by tightening in increments and checking frequently.  (Confirm "barely touch" as a slight metal chirping sound when you "bump" the motor on for an instant).

Now back off the grind setting a full 1/4 turn of the collar....that's 90 degrees.  This should put you in the neighborhood for espresso.

I think you're right...

What I did is I tightened it all the way until the burrs were touching and then slaked it a bit, but I didn't slack enough I think.

The grinder sure seems more... agressive now ;) I think its a bit faster than before, hopefully the taste will be a bit better as well!

You know...I'm not sure the taste has changed MUCH, but it does seem,  hmm, clearer?

Possibly as if there's less fines than before...

I'll see after a few more shots :)

I swear that my espresso improved about a week after my last SJ burr change.  I don't know if there truly is a break-in, or seasoning period for new burrs.  But my experience would support that theory.

I've experienced this also.
I'm sure that it's true, & my theory/hypothisis is that under microscopic examination of the new burrs leading edge cutting surface/s., there are many high & jagged peaks & valleys.

After a certain period of time grinding coffee beans, these edges, & high spots get 'burnished' or leveled/evened out with the friction of the coffee grinds., & makes for a more uniform grind. This is kind of like the leather "stropping/burnishing" effect of the leather strap against the straight razor. I had a breaking in or settling period of about a week or so with my new Rancilio Rocky & new Mazzer Mini.

I will make sure to report in a week or two then :)

Only had 1 shot so far, still adjusting the grind.

There is an interesting discussin about Grinder Burr Seasoning that may be helpful.  Now whenever I install new burrs I run a few pounds of inexpensive, medium-to-light roast beans before using the grinder to make espresso.

Very interesting indeed. I wonder if I will have a good enough palate to see the difference, but we will see. Sadly I don't really have 5-10lbs to lose on it, 4-5 weeks should do the trick.

One other thing I have to ask. When installing the burrs, I noticed there is some room for them to move one way or another before you bolt them done. What I mean is that there is some slack in the hole where you bolt it down. My fear was more or less that the top wouldn't be perfectly aligned with the bottom. Anyone noticed this?

It was the same with the burrs that were in place before so I imagine its normal, but still i'm a bit surprised it doesn't affect anything...
