I have been giving serious thought to buying a MXKR (the black manual version) after doing what research I could, a respected seasoned cupper who had tried the grinder said he believed it was a neutral and clean grinder especially compared to the SJ and the Mini (which I currently own). Researching this grinder is not as easy as say the Cimbali Max Hybrid, there just aren't that many postings here or at HB.com and there don't seem to be any local to Los Angeles dealers or owners that would give me a chance to see it in person. I wish someone had posted a YouTube video of its operation -now that would be hip, hint, hint.
I don't want this to be an open thread for other grinder owners to take over the direction. I really would just like to get feedback from Macap MXK owners.
I would have liked to have created a poll, A) Would you still choose to buy it B) After using it for some time I would choose something else, - but I don't know how to do that on this site. So, if you would list your pros and cons of your grinding experience and then perhaps comment on externals such as the fit and finish. For example I've read from some that it feels cheap... though I once tried a M4 next to my Mini and I didn't think that. Are there any links to the mod that quiets the doser handle thwack?
Myself, my habits are as follows. I leave some beans in the hopper for bean weight to get a more consistent grind, I thwack the doser while grinding, I change beans occasionally when I want to do a "vicarious journey to somewhere new" but mostly I use Klatch Roasting's Belle which has strong flavors on my Mini of chocolate, brandy, a little berry. Besides wanting to improve the taste of my espresso I want to completely stop doing the Weiss Distribution Technique (see HB.com). I'm using a rotary pumped Hx with direct plumb. I had a CMH for a couple of weeks and loved the espresso it made, in fact it made me want to make more espressos, BUT there were other issues of the grinder that annoyed me and I'm hoping the MXK will let me have my cake and eat it too. Otherwise, the wife drinks Americanos and I drink espressos, capps, and Americanos.
Thanks Dan, I imagine you're referring to the Titan Grinder Project. But, I was hoping to hear from owners who've used theirs for awhile. There are even fewer owners over there.
Actually Ed there are at least a few MXKR (which I'm assuming is the same grinder) owners on HB who you might e-mail including Cannonfodder, Narc, Navin and Inputusername.
