Subject: La Pavoni Zip Espresso Grinder - Cannot Adjust Grind

I recently purchased a used La Pavoni Zip grinder.  When I go to adjust the grind I cannot turn the ring.  I push down the lock and apply as much torque as I or anyone I know can and the thing doesn't budge.  Any ideas on trying anything other than finding a way to torque it more?

Hi Kevin,

Welcome to CG.
I have an OEM version of the zip (EB), so I think it's probably the same as yours.  I cant imagine how it would have gotten stuck so hard.
You are turning it counterclockwise when looking down on it, correct?

If you want to apply more torque, you might try using an oil filter wrench (I think that's what they are for).
They have a rubber strap that goes around the object you want to turn and then locks into the other side of the handle.
Or you might try mimicking that with a towel before you buy one of those.

You could also try to use some penetrating oil on the threads.

Cheers,
Jordan

I got a used La Cimbali Cadet and the torque required to move the upper burr was incredible. The amount of crud inside the burrs and the coffee oils in there was unbelievable. A friend at work has a 10 year old Gaggia MDF that also has stuck burrs.  Proof they need to be cleaned, but getting them apart is not a simple task.

Ok, so hopefully no one minds me hijacking this thread, but it mentions both the grinders I want to ask about--The La Cimbali Cadet and the La Pavoni Zip

So, my question is this: Which one is the better grinder?  I'm mainly concerned with the number of grind settings and consistency of the grind.  I already own the Cadet, but I might be able to get the La Pavoni in the pic for an incredible price (and i'm not one to pass up a deal :)

any and all thoughts and comments welcome
