Subject: Doser & drip?

Is it at all realistic to use a grinder with a doser when using it for anything other than espresso (like a drip machine)?  I want to get a good espresso grinder but I'd rather have one grinder on the counter than two.  Does that instantly count out dosers?  I've never actually used one so I have no idea what it would be like if you were filling something other than a portafilter.  Is there any way to mod a doser machine to make it more friendly for other applications?  My top choices are the Mazzer Mini and Macap M4.  I'm leaning toward a stepped doserless M4 so it's not limited to espresso.  However, I think dosers are just plain cool and I'd love to try one!

Hi Mark,

No the doser works just fine for drip grinding.  I use my Mazzer Super Jolly for all my coffee grinding and the doser is not an issue.  In fact I find it handy at times for catching all the grounds then dispensing them into my brew basket.  I wouldn't worry about the doser at all.

Thanks for the info Tim.  Now that you mention it, it does sound like it would be easier to let it catch the grounds instead of having to hold the basket under it the whole time.  If you let the grounds collect in the doser until you're completely done grinding, do they dump out quickly or do you have to give it several rotations before everything is out?

Oh I have another general question about dosers...  How loud is each thwack relative to the grinding itself?  In particular, how is it on the Mini and M4?  I keep reading how quiet those two grinders are and I'd love to keep the noise level to a minimum for mornings when I'm up and out while others are still sleeping.  Can you dose softly?

It takes several pulls of the lever to get all the grounds out.  But really its no big deal.

The doser can be silent as long as you don't pull the handle very hard against its stop, or release the lever and let it spring back on its own.  Go easy on your doser and it will be silent.  Typically grinder noise is in reference to the sound of grinding the beans though and lets face it that will never be silent.

Oh okay, that sounds fine.  My current grinder actually gets louder and higher-pitched once there are no beans remaining so if those grinders are more quiet at the end and the doser isn't too loud, that will be a big improvement.
