I tried searching, but didn’t find what I’m looking for (but I’m sure its there somewhere). I got my replacement SJ burrs today from Chris’s Coffee, and will get them installed Saturday.
How do I find the zero? Ensure they are not touching, start the grinder, and slowly lower the burrs until I barely hear them touching? Will letting them touch for just a bit hurt them?
Once I find the zero, about how far do I back off experimenting for espresso? On the adjustment collar number scale, is it about ˝ a number? About 1 number? A lot more? I realize “it depends” will be the exact answer, but I’d like a place to start so I can do trail and error from there.
And when I go courser for drip/French press, about how many numbers should I back off from espresso, again as a starting point for trial and error?
I’ll use tape or find some other method to mark the settings so I have baseline references in the future.

I'd try somehwere between 1/4 turn and 1/2 turn of the collar (between 90 and 180 degrees). I currently have a Super-Jolly set for drip coffee at ~90 degrees courser than I had it set for espresso

Jon,
Thanks for the reply. I installed the burrs, and spun them by hand to find zero, then went courser, turned it on, and slowly worked toward that same spot. The zero was in the same spot. I put a labeler sticker on the frame next to the zero on the collar, and now I'm working the espresso, vacuum pot and french press settings. Sorry, I don't have fresh beans on hand, but I plan to order from this business soon. http://www.kivacoffeeroasters.com/
