I'm gonna answer my own question here. Yes the mazzer mod works on a 5KCG100 and I now have a great grinder!
FWIW I didn't have to trim down the shoulder on the burr carrier, I achieved the same result by shimming the rotating burr out by maybe 3-4mm using a sheet of plastic (a piece of thin kitchen cutting board) so that the burrs will now touch before the auger shoulder bottoms out.
By going stepless I'm now getting a great grind at setting 5 1/4 and if I go up to around setting 8 I'm getting a grind suitable for turkish coffee. The whole mod took about 40 minutes and that was taking my time with carefully Dremeling out the stationary burr seat, drilling and tapping the 5mm threads for the new burr screws and cutting, shaping and drilling the shim for the rotating burr.
The burrs were $39 on ebay too.
Now I've turned a piece of junk into a functional companion to my KA espresso machine.
Nice to see these mods are still happening - Mine is still very much in the rotation for espresso - I love the fluffy grinds not to mention the taste - maybe the reason people like the Super Jolly grinds over the Mini's is related to burr speed - the KA drops the burr speed from the Mazzer's speedy 1600 rpm to a leisurely 450 rpm - can't hurt the taste and likely improves it in my opinion.
I chew coffee beans with my teeth while gargling with 195 F water to enjoy coffee. What is this "coffee brewing" device you speak of?

Having recently purchased an espresso machine, I needed a decent grinder. Having told my wife at the time of purchasing the Kitchenaid Proline Grinder "this is my last grinder" a few years ago, I decided to upgrade 'ol faithful. I bought it solely off Mark Prince's writeup, and I can't say I agreed with his claims of consistency and fluffiness. I had plenty of fines in the bottom glass but for press and drip it served its purpose. Anyways, I purchased Ben Choong's conversion kit ($55) from his youtube post, picked up the OEM mazzer burrs ($40), pulled the stepped pins and added the teflon tape to make the dial stepless, and added my own chute fashioned from an old Illy tin. Here is a pic of the result. I haven't really used it much but so far the grinds seem very consistent and are fluffy. I haven't much experience with premium grinders so I can't comment on any comparisons, though I wonder how close I'm getting to an actual Mazzer Mini. With my improvised stand the grinds drop per perfectly into the portafilter without any static and I'm wasting much less beans than I was before using a manual scoop.

That looks amazing! I also have a Pro Line and I just did the stepless mod last night, although it went a bit wrong at one point and I was grinding the burrs together - DOH! There were very tiny metal shavings coming out when I was adjusting the white knob. I finally got it back together properly and I am getting a really decent espresso grind at around the 6.5 mark. Since I think I may have worn down my burrs too much, I want to do the Mazzer mod next. Was it pretty easy to do? I have seen Ben's YouTube video but is that the only instruction available or does the kit come with printed instructions too? The Illy can funnel looks really cool...I gotta do something like that with mine. Nice job!

Ben's kit was well thought out and easy to use. No instructions were included so I watched the video while doing the work. One word of caution however - the kit comes with spring washers so you'll want to check that all the new fasteners have adequate length on the receiving end. I'm not sure if my screws were too short or what, but on the traveling burr carrier I stripped some opening threads on a tapped hole. The fasteners held torque sans washers on that end so I called it good.
Here's a pic of the chute on its own. Once I had a flat piece of usable tin, it took about 20 minutes to work and install. I reused the center screw plus a spare washer to secure the chute; it also serves as a grounding path for electrostatic discharge. Also, I neglected to mention that I removed the finger guards as rasqual did. Overall I'm pretty satisfied with the results. It's awesome to watch the steady stream of grinds fall straight into the portafilter, which I'll swirl in my left hand to have the grinds spiral into an even distribution. I'm most happy about not having to use WDT to get satisfying results on the bottomless portafilter!
@EricBNC, thank you for easing my mind. The rational part of me believes you but my other half still yearns for a deal on the Rocket/Mazzer Mini Electronic Type A/B. I'll probably mess around with the Auber coffee timer for a homemade version of the Type A. I can justify incremental upgrades more easily than I can sink US$900 MSRP at once for a home grinder.
