I'm looking into getting a used MD-50 for home use with my NS Oscar.  Can it be used without a hopper?  How does it compare to say a Mazzer Super Jolly or Cimbali Jr?

Is there anything I should be aware of with this grinder - idiosyncracies? good points? bad points? how tall is it hopperless (will it fit under kitchen cabinet)?

I did a search and noticed that Tex and SJM have one (or had one?)  Looks like Tex even prefers it to a Super Jolly - why Tex?

i read on tex's profile that he is suspended.. i don't know why.

the main knock on the md50 is that it is big.. i mean huge. like run a coffee shop from your house.

the thing about having a grinder that big is that it is a great consistent grinder that will last forever, but there are certain impracticalities to having it in a home making 4 doubles a day.

i had a gaggia commercial grinder that i basically had to pull apart so i could get to the chute.. otherwise you would get the coffee from the last shot you ground. There is already enough build up of grounds in smaller grinders like rocky..

Basically you need to find a commercial grinder that can grind a double as well as a day's worth

i have a Rossi RR45 coming in that i got for a steal off ebay.. i'll keep you updated on that.. but i suspect the same issues  to arise

congrats!
I've been eyeing some commercial grinders on eBay lately and hoping to snag one(maybe two!)  for less than $150 with shipping.

well, my tagex md50 just arrived today ........
it looks like the upper burr isn't there :-(.  haven't taken it completely out of the box yet but it sure is huge!
it's late and i have the mazzer anyways :-)
if tex ever gets unsuspended i'd sure like to hear from him about the virtues of this grinder.  i'll save the mazzer major story for another post but looks like i have a project that'll keep me from honeydews....

Okay, Caesar, let's try this again.

First of all, I'm under the impression that Mark hasn't unsuspend Tex after all or at least yet.  He did offer to, but seems to have changed his mind since I posted Tex's letter.

Second, and back to your grinder, there was a thread several months back in which someone told me that although the doser mechanism itself can't actually be removed, the innards of the doser can be taken out so that the grounds actually fall straight out/down.....

I have been searching a bit but haven't found the thread, nor have I actually done the work on my MD50 to date, but if/as/when either of those things happens, I will let you know.

thx susan

looks like it may be a while before i can get to the MD50...  I need to dial in my Mazzer Major :-)

I may have been too quick to judge the md50 being upper burrless (or is it burlesque?)

I'll post pictures of the MD50 but it sure is big, at 1st glance it looks taller than my Oscar.

BTW, how's the Bunn?
I too fell for the HX bug when I was able to get a NS Oscar for a good price (cheaper than a Silvia!)

I started looking at eBay once I realized my *$ Barista Solis 166 was hard to dial in.  Now I have an MD50, Mazzer Major, and a Jacky and of course the *$ Barista grinder.  I'll have to decide which one to let go as I don't think i need 4 grinders.

The Bunn is being fun.
Check us out over at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BUG-is-Bunn/

Of course fun for me means taking things apart, figuring out how they work (or don't) and hoping to get them back together.

It's gonna be months before I can actually pull a shot and figure out whether I like having an HX machine or not.  Currently the pump is being overhauled....Sigh..

well i just powered her up...
wow!!
it takes a looooong time for the burrs to stop spinning once you turn it off.

also, its not an automatic one so i don't have to mess with taking that stuff off.

it's awfully hard to adjust the burrs on this one....

with the hopper it measure ~20 inches tall, w/o hopper its ~14 inches tall
footprint is ~11 deep x 6 wide.

i'll post a pic with it next to both the Maz Maj and the Silver Grouch ....

well, here's the line up of the 2 with the Silver Grouch (Oscar)

no way i can cut the Major hopper to fit in under the cabinet, but definitely possible with the md50
But, the Major is brand spanking new

MD50 will have to wait .....

For shame! Where are your priorities?  Cut the grinder to fit the cabinet? Excuse me?  Last time I checked an angle grinder cuts through cabinet wood like butter.

(Pssst. OK you have me convinced you are just as much of a nut as the rest of us.  I would love to see Susan's counters.)
