I found a local wood turner that has been making beer tap replacement handles for a long time. They work just like espresso replacement handles so he knows what he is doing. He made me a nice short fat tamper handle. Price was reasonable $20, photo to follow. He is retired so should have a faster turn around over some of the other wood espresso part turners.

Reminds me of lee trevino's famous quote. He was on a course, and during a thunder storm, he held up a one iron in the air. When questioned about the danger in what he was doing. He said "even God can't hit a one iron"
