Yeah, you make some excellent points. I guess what I really mean is, not so much that I disagree with your comments, but rather, that I think some people aren't ready for what you, I and many others here have undertaken, and so they can achieve acceptable newbie results from staying on the cheap and less adequate.
In another thread, you mentioned the crap machines that were often given as gifts many years ago. I'm guessing you meant the steam toys. There were a number of years, as you admitted, when a stock Silvia was considered the bomb for an entry level machine. To both the credit of that and the discredit of Rancilio, the machine hasn't changed. However, those of us who are really into this craft have much, much higher expectations, and so...we no longer consider the Silvia acceptable...even though it's still doin' exactly what it did back when it was introduced.
In principle, I do agree with you that in order to achieve high quality all of the time, one needs to drop a fair amount of money into a machine and grinder combo, and truth be known, if anyone close were to ask me what I consider an acceptable starter setup, I'd have to say spend at least 1k on your pump driven machine and at least $500 on your motor driven grinder. However, I know that many newbies can't afford that o aren't ready to commit to the craft that deeply, and also that many newbies will be elated, yes elated, to produce something comparable to or marginally better than a *$$ drink - which as you and I know, ain't hard to do. So, in my replies, I always try to buffer my true feelings with their goals, expectations and budget in mind. When I read many posts about the lowest end pump machines and how to improve, my first thought is almost always, upgrade, but I realize that's usually not useful help.
And I'm not saying you or anyone else doesn't reply in that manner...only stating how I operate on here.
Anyhow, I really appreciate the offer...and next time I'm in So Cal, I'm definitely going to try to take you up on it...and Wayne too (he's offered in the past)...and if you guys ever find yourselves in Houston, please don't hesitate to let me know, as I'd like to return the offers!
. Always remember the most important thing is what ends up in your cup!
