Subject: Wow Am I Ever Getting High !!

I'm a long time coffee drinker (drip).  Then about 10 years ago I discovered the French Press method.  I immediately liked the results but w0w the caffeine hit was enormous.  It was almost disturbing.  I did stay with it though and the strong reaction subsided as I (presumably) built up tolerance.  I drink a single cup of pressed coffee daily - and it is a highlight for me.

So now here I am having been given a Barista Athena espresso maker which I cleaned up and got working.  After having done so, I pulled a double shot using the standard pressurized pf and made a cappuccino.  It was 'okay' however I was totally unprepared for the caffeine hit I took.  It was really strong and very uncomfortable.  It lasted for hours and I could not sleep that night.

I had always read that espresso actually contained less caffeine due to the shorter dwell time.  But wow... not for me apparently.  When I drink my daily morning pressed coffee, I experience no discernible 'hit'.  The amount of coffee (arabica) that I used for the double shot might be a little more than the scoop-full I use for my press, but if so it isn't very much more.

Anyway today I gutted the pf and tamped up a double shot again.  The shot was much improved - and the caffeine hit about knocked me over again.  This was about 7 hours ago and I'm still flying.

I'm disappointed because this may really limit my enjoyment of espresso.  I might actually need to resort to decaf.

Have any of you guys had a reaction to espresso like thus?

I can't say that I have, but the handy man I gave a straight espresso to drank it like a shot of whiskey said it gave him a hot flash.  I tend to drink one or two a day and stop at noon.  Try another blend of beans.

Buying advice: GRINDER GRINDER GRINDER. Don't cheap out on the grinder.

If you think Arabica beans pack a caffeine punch they you should try Robusta beans. Indian Robusta Cherry roasted dark is amazing for press.  Another time I drank 3 triple espresso's in one day.  I think that's roughly 600+ mg of caffeine.   I was shaking like a leaf with my eyes popping out of my head all day and no sleep what so ever that night. None the less you get used to it after a while.  I can drink 2 doubles a day, feel the same as always and sleep like a baby at night.

Whatever's giving you the extra rush it isn't extra caffeine.  A double espresso has roughly the same amount of caffeine as a regular size (8oz) cup of filter Joe -- 60 -100mg.  A cup of French Press has a little less (because of grind coarseness).

Consider moderating your crystal meth use.

PS.  The range for caffeine in a triple espresso is roughly 90 - 150mg.

Yeah, I don't generally get a buzz from a double shot of my espresso.  I only drink 2-3 shots a day, and can drink just before bed without issues usually.  If I do 8 double shots in a day I do have issues sleeping, but I very rarely do that much espresso.
Robusta beans do hit me differently, and at 2 double shots back to back I can feel the buzz.

Some people are more sensitive to caffeine than others it seems.

Well none the less from what I read a single 7g shot can contain 70-100 mg of caffeine.  So.... A triple 21g shot can contain 210-300 mg.  The average human being shouldn't consume more than 300 mg of caffeine a day. That is if you don't want any adverse effects.  Before resorting to decaf try a single shot espresso and or drinking it slower.  If you gulp back anything with caffeine your gonna get a jolt.

The shorter dwell time is offset by the fine grind I believe. The coarser the grind (french press) the longer dwell time is required.

Exactly what I was thinking.  Or perhaps MORE than offset.

This is so extreme that I'm going to have to set this all aside for now.  Perhaps I'll try again with some decaf.
