As Illy covers, the coffee height and width ratio make a difference. The top and the bottom of the puck see very different things. For example, the bottom of the puck sees far lower average temperatures and less extraction. Taller increases this effect, wider reduces it.
Tapering baskets to adjust for this top to bottom variation is interesting (but evidently unsuccessful). Ie, increase or decrease WPTC near the bottom.
