I completed a barista course (which is accredited by TAFE) on Wednesday, in the hope of finding a job. It was really helpful, we got to make lots of coffees, and they gave me lots of helpful advice on finding a job as a barista. For those out there who are baristas, and whose first job was as a barista (my scenario), do you have any advice for me?

Same as anything, really. Be willing to start doing shitty jobs and work up. A barista course will be helpful, but most places have their own standards to which they prepare their coffees-- even if it is ultimately up to barista's taste. And depending on the volume of the shop, managing customer service, the line, cleanliness and the like may be just as much as (or more!) of a challenge than the coffee itself.

I can say that you'll earn mucho points in the interview if you let them know that you clean as you go. Be quick to learn the drink recipes and follow your lead until you pick up speed and find your technique. On the interview, be confident and show them how charismatic you can be. :) Good luck in your job hunt!

Thanks for the advice! I got called in for a local one [which actually does some of the best coffee I've had, different weekly single origin, La Marzocco machine etc. most importantly though - the guy's a really good barista and knows what he's doing]. He was happy with me after the trial, and said he was going to call about hours, but apologised when I was in there the other day, saying that the girl who was going to be quitting and creating an opening for me doesn't want to quit anymore :'( Hahaha, so heartbroken! I'll keep handing them in and maybe write some cover letters this time.
