I'm new to the board but would love to join in. I've been in the coffee business for a few years now and I usually love it! I'm a little overworked and realllly tired... put in 6 days this week, and 13 hours today alone (yup and alone on a Sat for 10 of those hours). It's been rough, and I'm exhausted. Our café is short staffed at the moment, and I'm pretty much the on-call until that changes. But I'd love to trade and learn some new techniques here and maybe keep myself from getting burned out.. and try to remember why I love it so much when I'm tired like I am now.
As you are now finding, being indispensable has its down side as well. Please be careful. Working those kinds of hours and shifts that long leads to fatigue, and working around boiling water and steam combined with fatigue can lead to some nasty injuries.
I work in a roastery right now and sometimes I get REALLY burned out from coffee. I find the best way to keep interested is to keep my home and work coffee experiences totally separated. I keep my "stupid curiosity" with coffee at home and take it more seriously and methodically at work. I still get excited on my way home from work to play with my gear. I thought getting to play with commercial equipment would be the end all to my interests, but not really.
