If you think of coffee for what it is...a food product...it's to be expected. Pretty much any food product will begin to stale after you grind it up into tiny, nearly microscopic particles, and then let it sit around unused. One example that is often used here is an apple. Simply cutting it into slices reveals how rapidly it browns from oxidation. Imagine what it would look and taste like if you took a fresh apple, made it into applesauce and then left it sitting out on the counter. I can imagine what you're thinking now, but NO, you can't retard pre-ground coffee beans staling by putting them into the refrigerator.

ok thanks to everyone for the help and advice, you have twisted my arm, i have now done a bit of searching and done a deal on a 5 month old Iberital MC2 Doserless Grinder, they are about £140 new over here and from what i have read it should be ideal for me as a noob. Im getting it for £80. I pick my espresso machine up on wednesday night and my grinder on saturday night. How exciting lol. If i drink more lovely coffee it may reduce my beer intake ha ha.

Good luck on that grinder, we don't have those here so the info base on them in the U.S. is slim but at that price, you are on the VERY slim edge of POSSIBLY being able to grind for espresso. In the U.S. espresso able grinders START at about $300 and go up, WAY up from there.
AS said above, the grinder is the espresso maker and the machine is the accessory to the grinder so skimping on the grinder makes the whole process harder to do and lower quality all around.
As to rapid spoiling, Coffee is a food product, and as such, it is sensitive to oxidation. Think of an apple, cut it open and in about 15 minutes it will turn brown, right? The same process happens with coffee but because it is brown to start with, you don't see it. Now, cut that apple into 1000 small pieces and let it sit for weeks before you eat it, this is what you are doing with pre ground coffee.

When I first started my interest with coffee, this are my first questions as well. But upon reading a lot about coffee grinders, espresso machines and coffee bean types and frequenting coffee sites, I get to learn more. No to pre ground coffee. Yes to a good grinder. May need to opt for brand new if you ask me. May have to top up your current budget but you get to choose which is the best for you.
