Thought this would be cool. Everyone always knows all the normal guys, like Klatch, Metropolis, Stumptown etc. Even the Roaster threads over the years are generally the same ones over and over. Thought it'd be cool to find out about other roasters that aren't really known that people may use. Like I've mentioned before Cafe Don Pablo http://www.cafedonpablo.com/ in Miami is good (had espresso blend, Brazil, and Guatamalan). And just ordered coffee from Fair Mountain http://www.fairmountaincoffee.com/ , got the espresso blend, peru, and sample of Nicaraguan. Espresso and Peru were on the oily side for me however unlike other oily beans I've had these were both great and packed with flavor, but the gem was the Nicaraguan, was so good. Can think of some others in my area but they don't ship so won't name them lol.
So post up Roasters you've used/tried that aren't the normal go-to ones! Be cool to know about some others to try that aren't the "norm".
I just know the ones in the chicago area. Of course Intelligentsia and Metropolis. I've also grown fond of Halfwit, GasLight and Big Shoulders Coffee. All Premium quality in my opinion up there with the best. I've also dabbled with Barrington Coffee and Blue Bottle, which might be better known, i'm not sure.
Thank you for starting this thread. Boston Stoker in Dayton, Ohio has an online store full of flavored coffees, but if you look around that, they have some nice varietals. They offer both a dark and light roast of their Costa Rican La Minita; the dark I particularly enjoy as a pourover. When a roaster roasts a varietal two ways, it tells me that they are investigative and are interested in trying to bring out the best of their beans. The other recommendation is Whats Brewing in San Antonio. They offer a wide selection of roasts. I keep decaf around for in the evening. Their Mocha Java Decaf has a good amount of flavor and easily beats out the decafs from Redbird and Caffe Fresco, which are plastered all over this forum.
I'm new to the whole espresso prosumer hobby... but have been a french press fanatic for years. The Etheopian blend from http://www.pureintentionsroasting.com/ is by far the best I've ever had. I met these guys at a tasting and my girlfriend made the comment that it was like a support group. Good guys and fantastic coffee!
