Ha. I'll have to go with the classic seltzer water. Something about the heavy, hot espresso and the cool, bright fizz! Last taste goes to the espresso, though.
There's a big difference between drinking coffee to wake up and waking up to drink coffee.

I normally eschew sweet treats with espresso (certainly BEFORE the first sip, so as not to perceive the shot as bitter in comparison to a pastry. A biscotti, preferably with a wee bit of cinnamon right after. For me, the biscotti with a traditional 5-6oz cappa is the thing. Back and forth, a bite, a sip...heaven. Scone also works, but a bit heavy.

Raisin Scone and an Italian-Style Macchiato makes for the perfect breakfast for me. I'll drink a double shot with a tablespoon of sugar if I need something to really wake up my tastebuds in the morning. (Americanos just taste too watered down for me.) Since the sugar doesn't dissolve completely, it's not that bad as long as I don't drink the sludge on the bottom.
I can certainly vouch for having some water nearby. I always usually have biscotti with my coffee, but I dip it into the drink to soften it up.

Ah, those biscotti...I miss the Amore Bianco ones that were made near San Fran a few years ago (those ba$!ar&s that bought the company out and discontinued them ought to be hung by their nuts).
