Hi, i'm italian. I've a calibrated tamper. this is guaranteed to a pressure of 30 lbs, but if I of the tests by pressing with the tamper on the scale, when the handle touches the base of the steel pressure is approximately 14 lbs. A friend has a tamper different and the pressure it exerts is about 28-30 lbs. My tamper can be adjusted? is like that in the picture

Are you sure it's 14 lb and not 14 kg, which would be approximately 30 lb? After all you're in Italy, where your scale should be calibrated to the metric system.
Apart from that, it's not really important how hard you tamp as long as you do it consistently with the same pressure each and every time. The influence of tamping on extraction time is far from the impact of the fineness of grounds.

the pressure that my tamper exerts until it touches the base is about 6kg (13.3 lbs). I think it is a copy of the "espro" tamper. the distance between the handle and the base is about 5mm at rest. I think you would need a harder spring

sorry, but i don't understand when you write "But you might still do fine with a light tamp". I must use my calibrated tamper as normal (fix) tamper? tank's!

]Did you get it off Ebay? That pic looks like one of the ones they use on there. I bought what I thought was a Espro tamp, but it was just a generic 'automatic calibrated tamper'. These are not as good as the Espro. I bought a 58mm that was off in measurement by a couple mm. It also was slightly crooked which I noticed right before I returned it. Here's a thread I made on it: http://coffeegeek.com/forums/espresso/questions/586020
The Espro has their logo/insignia up top, these generic ones have an X or similar like Click Here (i146.photobucket.com)
I guess that's because you can get your caffè at any bar. You don't need to brew espresso at home. Dici la sagra scrittura: unni c'è erva, 'un ci voli grasciura.

yes.. it's a similar... likely to change the spring inside the tamper would become harder and should be better but I'm afraid of damaging it.
