Caffè con panna, just one of many espresso based coffee drinks from Italy. How about these?
Caffè corretto: espresso "rectified" with a shot of Grappa or brandy
Granita di caffè: stirred, frozen espresso
Caffè freddo: cold, sweetened espresso stretched with water
Caffè macchiato freddo: espresso with just a draft of cold milk
Maroccino: a tablespoon of molten chocolate is dispersed on the inside of a glass, then espresso is added and topped with two to three tablespoons of frothed milk and sprinkled with cocoa
*** "This drink of the Satan is so delicious that it would be a shame to leave it to the infidels." (Pope Clement VIII on coffee)
About 10oz of frothed milk. There are 'standards' and then different places use these terms to refer to different things. I, personally, use them only to reflect volume and not the consistency of the milk, but there are some who would infer that a cappuccino is stiff milk and latte is microfoam.
Macchiato can mean anywhere from 1 tablespoon frothed milk on top of espresso shot up to 1:1 espresso:frothed milk. Latte is shot of espresso brought up to fill a 10oz cup with frothed milk. Cappuccino is in a 6-8oz cup. You can use terms like 'wet' to mean microfoam, or 'dry' to mean stiff milk.
Or you can use starbucks lingo where carmel macchiato means 1 oz espresso : 14oz frothed milk : 4 tablespoons whipped cream : drenched in carmel syrup.
This is actually my preferred way of drinking espresso. I will either drink it black, black with a touch of sugar, black with a twist of lemon rind, or black with a bit of whipped cream on top.
I have my own whipper so I make the whipped cream myself. The hard part is finding cream without additives in the US. When I make it, I add a little powdered sugar and little homemade vanilla extract. I guess that might be called "chantilly" to be technical about it.
Rather than following recipes, we've put freshly made whipped cream (made with sugar and real vanilla) on black coffee and espresso for years. Topped with a little cinnamon. I also enjoy adding half and half to espresso on occasion just for something a little different.
While it can be fun to try coffee recipes, if you're drinking it at home isn't the ultimate goal just an enjoyable beverage? I like experimenting.
