Headphones are my best friend. I tried to offer and be informative about my coffee, the end result is the same.

In other news, was about to get my hands on some Terroir Mamuto; excited to try this!

It's really sad, isn't it when people can't understand your passion towards something?

Anyway, it's good that you have found a temporary solution to block off the snickering of your family. Though I can't understand it, what is so wrong about being enamored by coffee?! You could do a lot worse, for all they know eh? Like drugs or prostitution or whatever. LOL. My long term advice though, is to keep doing what you want. Eventually these people will see your passion for coffee and will learn to respect it. Who knows, maybe you'll be able to convert them too. Not anytime soon, obviously, but one day (maybe).

Oh I know, but I meant a research career in neuropharmacology (neuropsychopharmacology is what I'm actually interested in) which is still related to medicine. It's definitely not due to the pay- I just think there's such a huge amount of good that can be done in that field. Rad oncs have a great lifestyle and I'm very interested in that as well, especially with all of the emerging technologies. I think diagnostic radiologists  can make somewhat better pay, but that would bore me to death if I had to do that for years. The reason I'm still considering coffee is not exclusively for my benefit. I think it'd be nice to be able to start up my own business and provide a service that I'm really passionate about to others, and also educate them if they wish to be educated. I like helping others with this a lot.

Anyway, we should probably get back on topic.

I would strongly argue that a barrista (likewise a bartender) is working in a branch of neuropharmacology -- they're both preparing and dispensing psychoactive drugs ;-)

I'm not sure they're not doing more good than the ones in Big Pharma, for that matter.

Trying to explain to family why you've spent so much money and time on your hobby can be frustrating.  I would just point out that they have no idea what they're talking about.  And i'm sure each of them has a hobby you think is pretty lame too---you may want to point those out next time they chastise you for doing something YOU enjoy.  You could also rub all the coffee mugs on your balls---then sit and enjoy your coffee while you grin and watch them drink theirs.

Clearly, not all the advice in this thread is meant seriously.
