Subject: Weirded out by baristas

I walked into a certain cafe for the first time and ordered a macchiato, my usual drink if I'm buying coffee.  Their initial response was that it would be for here only, showing me a demitasse, and explaining a macchiato.  I said I knew what I ordered, then he said he gets a lot of people who order macchiatos thinking it's something else.  Very tasty, a bit heavy on the foam, but they did something with it that's a bit different from other places.  The foam went over the top of the demitasse but there was something about it that tasted different.  Return trips to this place though, I've found that their product is not consistent though.  Sometimes very good, sometimes just ok.  I think they are using Blue Bottle.

I went to Starbucks with someone and ordered a single macchiato and the girl asked me what size.  That's not a good sign.  I saw a bunch of cups behind her and asked that it be put in a demitasse which gave her a puzzled look.  She then asked if I wanted guronday, ventee, or tall and I repeated I want a demitasse.  Then I said the one on the far left.  The drink, bleh... ridiculously hot, foam, foam, foam, and more foam.

I have not set foot in a Starbucks in years...It was Peet's for me for years.  I still consider myself a coffee n00b though.  I usually make my own drip from a ceramic cone.  Everyone at work thinks it's gourmet stuff but it's the ability to make one cup at a time rather than a 12 cup pot that will sit and burn in the kitchen that attracted me to the cone method.
