Hey! For som wierd reason, often when I drink espresso I get very tired and "foggy". Isn't caffeine known for having the opposite effect (more energy etc.) ? I find it both good and bad since I can enjoy the espresso late at the evening without have to worry about not getting to sleep, but I also miss the little "kick" to start the day in the morning or before exercising etc. :P I experience this mostly when I drink straight double espresso, while with lungo espresso's and normal drip coffee I usually get more of the energetic effects. Drinking soda, juice or other drinks with the espresso tends to prevent the "tired" feeling.
Somebody who experience/has experienced the same as me? What may be the cause? Caffeine tolerance or withdrawal?

Personally, caffeine seems to have very little effect on me at any time of day. The aromas and bold flavors of coffee may "kick start" me in the morning, but I'm long past the ability to get serious effect from caffeine :P
I can drink two doubles a single americano and a single cappuccino in the late evening without a single noticed effect (or in the morning and still be groggy...) Of course with all that liquid, the bladder may be more energized than the mind....but that's not caffeine related...
Every once in a while something like that will keep me up but not usually.

TheMadTamper: I think it may be caused by caffeine tolerance. When you have drinked coffee almost daily for some time, the brain/body is used to the caffeine intake. I have drinked espresso for about 1 month now (since i got my machine/grinder), and I had obvious effects of caffeine the first days. I think you would get effects of caffeine again if you abstain from drinking coffee(and any caffeine at all) for some days/weeks. How often do you drink coffee, and do you feel some sort of "cravings" if you stop drinking for a little time?

I think I get enough calories, since I eat breakfast, lunch, dinner and before bed + drinking proteinshakes and calorie "gianer's" for exercising. But I think I drink to little water. The only water I drink is with the dinner.... and the water in the coffee, lol x)
Edit: usually drinking about 1 liter of water at the gym, but that is almost nessescary since im working out pretty hard....

You're new here, aren't you :P I drink coffee pretty much daily, sometimes twice daily. Several shots a day many days (after all, they do it in Italy, and despite all the "the sky is falling, caffeine will kill you" reports, the Italians are the second longest lived people beside the Japanese (who drink quite a bit of caffeine in their green tea, as well.) If the caffeine is killing us....other things are killing us a lot faster.... :)
However, when I end up skipping days (such as when Klatch mis-ships my coffee and it's a few days late....) I have no "cravings" or withdrawal either. I'm pretty much the same, energy wise, with 4 doubles or none. Which is convenient, as a coffee nut.
I've heard that sipping coffee slowly throughout the day is more effective at keeping up energy levels. While a double shot is more concentrated in terms of caffeine, and it has been pointed out that it crosses the blood barrier faster due to its concentration (an effect I've never experienced noticeably. I'm no more awake after a double shot than from a single shot in a 4oz Americano) I suspect a good part of the dose is scrapped as excess by the body rather than absorbed over a slowly consumed steady stream of it.

MV: Off topic a bit, but have you heard or tried chia seeds? They help retain water, and may help with fatigue. I've been using them lately with good success, especially with the hot weather.

Now heres something to ponder ... Italians are the 2nd longest living people and are likely as a society the highest users of aluminum cookware (i.e. aluminum moka pots). I bet there is at least one in every household that gets regular use. Which leads me to the following:
I am going to hypothesize that the reason the Italians live so long is not due to their alleged high caffeine consumption, but due to their ingestion of large amounts of residual aluminum from their moka pots.
And I will also hypothesize that the reason the Japanese live so long also is not their caffeine consumption, but the fact that as a society they aren't fat.

I didn't intend to imply that either culture was living long BECAUSE of their caffeine consumption. I meant that their high caffeine consumption, something that many here will insist is dangerous, seems to NOT be killing them faster than lower-caffeine consumption cultures. I.E., it's not caffeine that's killing us....or at least it won't do so as fast as whatever things are near certain to kill us faster :) DESPITE an average of high caffeine consumption, they're outliving us. So it's unlikely that caffeine consumption has a significant effect on lifespan either way. (Theory only of course.)
I suspect fresh, real food has more to do with their lifespans. I'd say stress...but Italy's even more bankrupt than the US with a high poverty rate....so plenty are stressed there. And the Japanese....I swear they love torturing themselves simply for the fun of it....their stress reaction seems to have a much higher tolerance, culturally :) Japanese forms of "entertainment" often seem like more work than work to me...
But food...that's one thing both Italy and Japan have in common. Very little processed, stripped, stored, transported food. They're small geographical areas with rich local food production for the most part. I think they simply get more nutrients and less filler than us. Reduced physical cold weather stress probably helps too.
But the point is, if caffeine (and aluminum!) were the dangerous things they're made out to be, Italians would probably be one of the shorter ranking lifespans in the industrial world. Heck, all that coffee is Robusta!
It's all very unscientific theorizing of course...
