You know those people that want to tell you how to raise your kids but have none of their own? That is how i feel when someone with a kitchen appliance tells me how the merits or dis-merits of my machine or how to use it.

Interesting question. Until recently, I would have said that with the naked PF, there is no reason to use something else. You can see the extraction better, no loss of crema due to extra contact, ...
But when going to a coffee event some weeks back, the barista there noted that using a double spout PF, he can see the flow better. If it bends too much inwards as it comes out, the flow is too slow. If it comes straight out, flow is too fast. If it bends inwards just slightly, flow is right.
Granted you can achieve a similar effect by timing the shot/volume. This observation coming off a double spout is also quite good.
This all assumes everything else is dialed in right and a regular routine is being followed.
I asked the same question and got the same answers as the one I'm going to give: I use my naked portafilter exclusively. I do back flushes with the single portafilter because I keep the blind basket in there. In the very rare times I pull two singles from a double basket, I will use the double portafilter.
Naked is where it's at. Tastes better, looks better and gives you a better look at your dose/tamp/etc. I know some very good cafes and baristas have gone back to the double portafilter because of taste and training - the former is that the shot will taste a bit different (good or bad), the latter is due to all the training for years has been on double portafilter.

I received a new naked PF and it came with a triple basket. If I want to make a double shot, should I use the triple basket it came with, or should I use a double basket? The double is a bit shorter. I dont know if the shorter basket will affect the naked PF. I usually dose my double with between 15 -18 grams per 1.5 -2 oz depending on the beans. What would be a good starting point with the triple?

I pull the first 2-3 shots on a new roast with a naked to dial in the shot and then switch to a double spout. I like the look of the spout more and if the shot should go just a little crazy then I don't mind because I'm typically making a cappa and won't notice the taste difference. I will however use a bottomless exclusively when I'm making straight shots. I use a ridgeless VST basket and it's a pretty quick switch for me.
